A 'bus bridge' to help ease traffic around Nuneaton's station is back on the timetable. It has been more than a decade since the plan for the 'bus only' bridge over the River Anker was first mooted.

But it is back on the agenda again after Warwickshire County Council's cabinet agreed a list of prioritised capital measures taken from the Warwickshire Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP).

The proposed Nuneaton Bus Bridge was included on the list and will provide a link between Nuneaton Bus Station and Bond Gate. It is no secret that congestion is caused around the station on Harefield Road as buses make their way in and out.

Now, after being mothballed, the plan is back on the timetable and the county council has said that a proportion of the BSIP Plus revenue funding for 2023-24 given by the Department for Transport (DfT) is set to be used to pay for an initial feasibility study to be undertaken.

A Shire Hall spokesperson told CoventryLive that the proposed scheme would need to be progressed in a phased approach and capital funding would need to be secured to progress the scheme futher.

This would pave the way for designs to be drawn up and a public engagement exercise before the final implementation. Members of the county's cabinet are set to meet today (May 9) to decide whether to approve the initial feasibility study.

The 'bus only' bridge forms part of much wider plans to resolve and improve traffic in the area. Under the Transforming Nuneaton programme, first launched in 2020, there is also a proposal for a transport hub next to Nuneaton Railway Station.

These plans have remained firmly on paper as no funding has yet to be secured for it.
