Doha: Following on from last year's Model United Nations (MUN) conference, the executive team of MUN club at the International School of London (ISL) Qatar successfully hosted its fifth annual Model United Nations conference.
The common theme of this year's conference was ‘Human Cooperation for Global Sustainability', and in today's world, it could not be more important. High school students from 10 different international schools around Doha engaged in productive, critical and intelligent debate in order to come up with solutions to many of humanity's problems.
With the theme reflecting the growing importance of human cooperation in order to make our planet sustainable, delegates discussed various issues, ranging from the Lake Chad Basin Crisis to preventing the pollution of the seas with micro-plastics, as well as a plethora of other pressing problems we face in the world today.
The Ambassador of Ecuador, Ivonne A Baki, was a guest speaker in the opening ceremony. She spoke about the Ecuadorian project to preserve the part of the Amazon in Ecuador, which has the highest biodiversity in the world.
She acted as an excellent example for all delegates regarding how problems of sustainability can be approached.
Close to 200 judges, advocates, chairs, and delegates attended this year's conference, from the International School of London Qatar, Al Jazeera Academy, Aspire Academy, Awsaj Academy, Birla Public School, Doha College, Middle East International School, Qatar Finland International School, and Stafford Sri Lanka School Doha.
Debate took place in the various committees, such as International Court of Justice, Security Council, the First Committee General Assembly, Human Rights Council, Economic and Social Council, and Environmental Commission reflected passion and diplomacy, as well as acute understanding of international issues.
The ISL MUN executive team would like to thank Oryx Rotana for their catering, the teachers at ISLMUN for being supportive, Her Excellency Ivonne A-Baki for her inspiring speech at the opening ceremony, as well as all delegates, advocates, judges, admins, press members, and directors who attended the conference and contributed to making it the success that it was.
